Elements of Risk Informed Decision Making in Belgium

In Belgium, basically, a deterministic approach to nuclear safety is applied. However, plantspecific PSA studies are performed and updated in the framework of the Periodic Safety Reviews (PSR). This process has led to a number of modifications to safety equipment and operating practices. Occasionally, PSA staff of AVN is requested to provide risk information regarding plant modifications, plant configurations, or justifications for continued operation (JCO) that are proposed by the licensee. AVN also performs PSA based event analyses (PSAEA) of selected operational events as a part of the operational experience feedback process. Finally, some investigations are currently undertaken to explore risk informed approaches to regulatory inspections.
